When the original “Sin City” opened to much critical acclaim in 2005, the timing was right for a sequel. But even with Robert Rodriguez at the helm, fans were disappointed with the movie’s gritty, violent style that left some viewers unsure they wanted to see more.
The director’s original vision of the gritty sequel “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” still stands up today — it’s just that his vision changed after he started work on the 2013 sequel “Sin City: The Definitive Version” for Netflix.
“The other version was basically what I had done, and the third one I went off and did with Jessica,” Rodriguez told TheWrap. “I think they’re all pretty good, I think all three are good.”
As for the possibility of another sequel, Rodriguez is keeping his cards close to the vest — and he’s not completely ruling it out.
“I don’t know if there’s a third one in the works,” he said, “But I think the third one is going to be better.”
“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” opened to $43 million at the box office on Aug. 5, 2008. It topped out at $112 million domestically and was considered a financial success, but not a sequel that moved the franchise forward.
“We’re talking about a 25th anniversary,” Rodriguez said, referring to the 20th anniversary of the original movie. “We’re probably going to do a year of celebration things, and then we’ll make the announcement.”
Now that he’s moved on from the “Sin City” universe, the director does not intend to pursue any other live-action adaptations of comic book properties for the foreseeable future.
